Monday through Friday, June 23-27, 2014

PROFOR Side Event: June 24, 8:45-9:55 AM Canada Room (A356)

The Committee on Forestry (COFO) held its biennial session to discuss the state of the world’s forests, focusing on their socioeconomic benefits and linked issues, such as wood energy. COFO convened senior government representatives to identify emerging issues, strive for solutions, and receive advice on action steps. For the fourth time, COFO was held in conjunction with World Forest Week, a series of meetings and events sponsored by FAO and its partner organizations and institutions.

PROFOR was also present! The team launched a PROFOR/FAO publication – “Assessing Forest Governance: A Practical Guide to Data Collection, Analysis and Use” – on June 24 from 8:45-9:55 AM. Details on the side event:

Collaboration between PROFOR and FAO (with support from a large number of development partners, think-tanks, and NGOs) has helped develop practical guidance for the collection of information on forest governance, in the shape of a guide on forest governance data collection and assessment. This session gave the first public overview of this guide to data collection and provided a forum to discuss how to make the best use of this guide.

The event, titled “Improving Forest Governance: Guidance for forest governance data collection, analysis and use”, featured a panel of high-level forestry experts including the Director of Social Forestry from Indonesia, the Deputy Director General and Head of State Enterprise of the Russian Federation, a government representative from Tanzania, the Deputy Head of FLEGT and REDD+ program of the European Forest Institute, and the Advisor on the Forest Governance Program of GIZ.

The session was chaired by Nalin Kishor, Senior Natural Resources Economist, PROFOR.

A record of the meeting is available for download here.

The guide is now available for download from the PROFOR website here and the FAO website here.
