Synopsis from the authors
"Access to clean and adequate supplies of fresh water is perhaps the most pressing challenge facing society this century. In response, new and innovative watershed financing and management tools are emerging across the globe. But information about these solutions is scarce, changing rapidly, and fragmented.

The new report tracks the size, scope, and direction of innovative financing mechanisms for water resource protection around the world, and provides detailed design and project analysis for policy-makers, project developers, investors, and other natural resource managers. The report also uncovers new developments around the world: from building bridges to carbon markets, to financing the switch to agriculture that deliver both long-term water and food security, to innovative mechanisms like groundwater offsets or using mussel beds to filter out nitrate pollution.

Charting New Waters: State of Watershed Payments 2012 is the second installment of the most comprehensive inventory to date of initiatives around the world that are paying individuals and communities to revive or preserve water-friendly features of the landscape. Such features include wetlands, streams, and forests that can capture, filter, and store freshwater. The report counts at least 205 programs-up from 103 in 2008- that in 2011 collectively generated US $8.17 billion in investments, an increase of nearly $2 billion above 2008 levels. The report identifies a raft of new programs gearing up for launch in the next year."

The report, executive summary and related inforgraphics are available in multiple languages (English, Spanish and Chinese) on the Forest Trends website on this page.
